34x22 is an audiovisual, site-specific projection mapping piece that consists of 748 rectangular metal plates. Each plate is treated as an independent object, a screen. The artwork revolves around combining two and three-dimensional forms inhibited in rectangular shapes of Rundle Lantern. Their nature and behaviour unfold through space, light, and sound synthesis. This fusion invites the viewer to immerse in geometrical patterns that create space distortions and optical illusions that evoke unknown scapes of digital entanglements.

The work vibrates with minimalist geometrical aesthetics and material honesty.

This new projected animation work from local artist Dave Court peels back layers of a facade, revealing an assortment of abstracted and representational sculptural forms creating suggestions of complex machinery and inner workings below the surface.

Building on Dave's current explorations bouncing between physical and digital modes of making, this new projection work is thinking through ideas around what is hidden and what is shown, what is seen and unseen, represented and abstracted.

From left to right, up or down – thoughts can go in any direction. They can spring up inside your mind or leap from one to the other.

Netherlands based Studio Toer who gave us Firefly Field as part of City Lights in 2021 return with a project that captures the constant flow of ideas by visualizing them as glowing orbs bouncing across the lawns of the Brookman Building at the University of South Australia – how appropriate!

Bringing together highly mathematical principles of music theory, Jen Lewin’s Chandelier Harp invites visitors to create literal music through the movements of their body.

By dancing beneath the harp’s unique series of laser sensors, participants can work collaboratively to play this interactive instrument fit with retro synthesizers to generate truly harmonious melodies.

Chirp & Drift is a flock of illuminated instruments that chatter in morse code messages combining ideas around birdsong, language and music. Gentle tones and harmonies are made by accordion reeds hidden within each ‘bird’. As they move, air is pressed through the reeds, reminding the listener of the delicate and fragile state of the environment and our own health. The installation translates the names of local birds into musical morse code through a musical system devised by the artist, which is almost impossible to decipher.

A playful probe into questions around interspecies communication, messages being obscured by interference, mis-interpretations and speculations around birds singing purely to enjoy making music.

Constructed as a largescale geometric cube cased in interactive screens, this installation by Montreal based Studio Iregular is a socio-digital experiment exploring the relationship between participants and interactive installations. It is so intuitive, it will make you question who is really in control…

Dimensional analogy is a site-specific projection mapping piece inspired by the mathematical concept of a four-dimensional space. Unlike the familiar three-dimensional world, whose functionality depends on the recognition of x, y, and z coordinates, the intelligibility of such a conception requires a fourth parameter - an additional spatial dimension. 

With the disinterested playfulness inherent in mathematics, the concept challenges the three-dimensional bias of the mind. Owing to the unorthodox nature of their form, the Adelaide Festival Centre shells represent an ideal basis for speculative and bold visual research; by transforming into entirely new spaces filled with polytopic shapes that use architectural geometry, their unique surfaces become a canvas on which an additional dimension appears.

Everyone loves a photo booth – but there’s more to this photo booth than meets the eye.

Encouraging audiences to participate in a continuous updating portrait, Alycia Bennett and Rei de Vries' collaboration Face Value is an evolving and amalgamated reflection of our community. Taking each individual’s photo and adding it to the collective canvas, this photo booth creates a striking homogenised portrait, morphing and changing over time as more and more participants add their photo to the artwork. Be sure to stay for your portrait to be printed in this playful example of collective image making!

A painter from Indulkana in South Australia’s Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands, Vincent Namatjira has established himself as a celebrated portraitist and a subversive chronicler of Australian history. He is an Archibald and Ramsay Art Prize winner, as well as being the great-grandson of the renowned Western Aranda artist Albert Namatjira.

In Going Out Bush the colonial façade of the Art Gallery of South Australia is temporarily relocated to the Central Australian desert.  Here, ‘out bush’, the building becomes a stage set for a vibrant and witty series of encounters where the Aboriginal flag takes pride of place and ghost gums grow as AGSA’s new architectural columns.

Designed for the creation of music without the technical know-how, enjoy an immediately satisfying creative experience either alone, shared with strangers, or in conversation with the sculpture’s onboard AI.

Jacques Rival brings his trademark sense of dream and wonder with this mischievous and playful tribute to our wonderful city. I LOVE ADELAIDE takes the simplicity of childhood and reimagines it with a monumental takeover of the Goodman Crescent Lawns, of the University of Adelaide. This larger than life snowglobe engulfs the Sir Thomas Elder statue within it, emblazoned with a neon titled ‘I LOVE ADELAIDE’.

The front façade of the iconic home of The Advertiser and Sunday Mail on Waymouth Street will be illuminated with ever-changing colour washes and light beams.

Connecting people in real-time across galleries in Adelaide, Murray Bridge and Bordertown, Lacunae transforms our separation into something where joy and connection bubbles up through movement, music and art. Returning in its new form after appearing as part of Big Picture Series in 2021, iconic street artist Vans The Omega builds on his collaboration with a series of talented artists for this sequence of short films and animated projects. Moving and cinematic, Light Beyond The Window Breaks invites you in to discover what we are allowed to view and contemplate the urban environment in which we live.

In large cities, it’s common not to know your neighbours. Rebuilding this community connection lies at the heart Sergey Kim’s work Neighborhood, using the simple gesture of stringing illuminated laundry from one building to another. A globally recognised image filled with culturally and ethnic mixed items from the city’s residents, Neighborhood is a positive portrait of people’s harmonious coexistence.

Artist Carla O'Brien had audiences joyously interacting with her work Neon Angel Wings, Neon Dog Park and Neon Hearts in 2021. For 2022, she adds another level of interactivity amongst the trees on North Terrace!

Mathematically calculated to each tree's dimensions, 2D and 3D neon geometric shapes will intermingle with the tree trunks and branches as if seemingly suspended in mid air, shining a new light on the city's north precinct.

Carla O’Brien’s Neon Winter light art installations are bright enough to liven up even the greyest of Adelaide’s day and nights during Illuminate Adelaide.

Vibrant and glowing bright at night, these touchable works are created with LED Neon Flex – a revolutionary new replacement for glass neon giving you an immersive 3D multicolour experience. Take a selfie with a cute Big or Baby Penguin, ‘wear’ a pair of oversized Neon Mittens or give a Big Neon Snowman a hug.

Showcasing experimental and diverse moving image works by contemporary First Nations artists through a national call out, New Light will feature commissioned work that explores compelling and complex concepts, to be displayed on the media screens at the entrance to the Adelaide Festival Centre.

Merging the movements of individuals to create an overlapping and everchanging collage of light, The Pool is a giant field of concentric circles that swirl with colour when activated by touch. Inspired by Australian tidal rock pools, The Pool uses cutting edge mesh-network technology and custom code to bring this vivid and ever-changing composition to life.

Sometimes, answering big questions means making sense of a much smaller world. Andrea Rassell’s The Society of NanoBioSensing blends art and technology to bring science out of the laboratory, and show us that there’s much more to our world than meets the eye. In an installation that’s half electron microscope, half playful Kinect interface, come explore the nanoworld up close.

The spectator can see from far away the silhouette of a planet, projected on a large wall. This image seems familiar: a crescent of light on a perfect sphere, it must be the moon. As they get closer, they discover details of craters, irregularities made of fine shadows and reliefs. Once close and observing attentively, they recognize the contours of continents, seas and oceans. What remains are traces of disasters, the monochrome reveals the absence of an atmosphere, the disappearance of the oceans.

It is up to the viewer to imagine what lies behind this view of an inert planet. The artist invites us to think about a possible future.

In a defiant rebuke of the ghosts of misogynists past, this inspiring blend of opera and videography from performer and choreographer Joanna Dudley steals from some of history’s most notoriously sexist speeches and recasts them into a feminist war cry echoing through the ages.

With an army of six young girls and one war mistress set in a series of life-sized video portraits as they perform this stirring original score, We Will Slam You With Our Wings is a show of intergenerational solidarity, strength and power that speaks to the past, the present, and the future.

South Australian artist Cristina Metelli’s creative work started early in life, exploring different approaches to drawing, sculpture and painting, each medium providing her with different ways of expressing her connection to nature. Focusing on her current abstract oil paintings as a source of inspiration, Within the Landscape takes advantage of Cristina’s experiments in digital projections to translate paint into light.
